FONDA – Winning a feature at Fonda Speedway is always special. Winning it on one of your primary sponsor’s nights at the track just makes it a little more exhilarating.

Craig Hanson survived an opening lap jingle to charge through the field for his second 30-lap modified feature victory of the season on Bill Lake Modular Homes Fan Appreciation Night Saturday at Fonda Speedway.

“I got into Dave Constantino. He checked up and got me early,” Hanson said in Victory Lane. “We fell back and I was trying to find a rhythm then Bobby [Varin] showed me the top. I got up there and he kind of slid down and everything just kind worked my way the rest of the way. The first win [May 15} I knew I was leading. This one I didn’t have a clue. I was just passing cars. I got up on the top and it was going good so I just kept hammering it.”

Nick Stone made a last-to-first run to pick up his eighth-straight Pro Stock victory of the season, while Mark Mortensen held off challenges from Payton Talbot, Dan Santabarbara and Cody Clark to score his first 602 Crate Sportsman win of the season and Kyle Dingman notched his second win of the year in the Limited Sportsman main event. In the 4-cylinder Mini Stock feature, Ken Hollenbeck was first under the checkers to garner his eighth-straight Single Overhead Cam victory, while John Napoli took top honors in the Dual Overhead Cam division for the third time this year.

Randy Delaney (Modified), Dan Colvin (Sportsman), Curtis Condon (Late Model), Car Cram (Mystique) and Jimmy Fugel (Antique) took home the winner’s trophies in the added Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series features.

Nick Heywood and JaMike Sowle brought the field of 22 modifieds to the green with Sowle grabbing the early lead over third-place starter Chris Curtis. The caution flew on lap three when Dave Constantino slowed and went pit side to repair damage caused in an opening-lap scramble.

Curtis took over the point on the restart only to have Sowle retake the lead on lap five.

Rocky Warner and Bobby Varin made their way to the front and settled in behind Sowle as Curtis battled with Hanson and Brian Pessolano for the fourth spot.

Running under green-flag conditions, Sowle maintained a five car-length lead over Warner as Hanson steadily moved forward taking over second from Warner on lap 14.

After using the top-side of the speedway to get to the front, Hanson dropped to the bottom on lap 21 and came away with the lead a lap later.

Sowle was unable to mount a counterattack as Hanson pulled away for his ninth career modified feature win at Fonda Speedway.

Sowle turned in his best finish of the season with a second-place run, with Warner third, Curtis fourth and Ronnie Johnson, who started last in a back-up car, finished fifth. Bobby Varin, Matt DeLorenzo, Danny Varin, Demetrious Drellos and Jack Lehner round out the top 10.

“We struggled. We had a good car and a decent motor,” Hanson said. “Now we have the same car and the same motor as everyone else is running and it shows.”

Santabarbara jumped out to an early lead over Brendan Gibbons and held the point for the first 18 laps of the 25-lap 602 Crate Sportsman feature.

Mortensen, who started ninth, Clark, Talbot, Tanner Warner and Edwards were all making their way to the front but were well behind the leader.

Lapped traffic came into play by lap 10, slowing Santabarbara enough that the field caught up to him.

Mortensen slipped past on the outside exiting turn four on lap 19, but Santabarbara fought back running side-by-side with Mortensen, while Clark and Talbot with side-by-side in their battle for third.

With four laps remaining, the front-running quartet came up on Griffen Mansmith, who held his line, allowing the leaders to split around him between turns one and two.

Santabarbara briefly took the lead before Mortensen charged back on the outside to maintain his position. Talbot took over second with a lap to go but could not get to Mortensen before the checkers dropped over his hood. Clark edged Santabarbara for third, with Warner holding off Gibbons for fifth. Edwards, Jason Reome, Jeremy Tyrrell and Brett Mortensen complete the top 10.

“He [Santabarbara] was running away at first and I was running the bottom because I really didn’t know what else was out there,” Mortensen said in Victory Lane. “I ended up moving up a little bit and we started moving forward. Lapped traffic held him up and I knew if I could get in front, I could use that lapped traffic as a pick. It has been a struggle. I brought the car back up to Dave’s [Dave Constantino, DKM Fabrication] last week and got a good setup but I made a mistake in my heat race and hit the Uke tire. Then I kind of found something in the feature. I carried that along to this week. I told them I would buy them a pizza if I parked it. So, I guess I owe them a pizza.”

Mortensen’s win ties him with Rocky Warner at the top of the Crate Sportsman win list with 25.

When Stone spun on lap six of the 20-lap Pro Stock feature it looked as if his win streak was going to come to an end.

However, the defending division champion made the most of a late-race caution to complete his run from the back for his eighth-straight victory.

“Of course, you want one [a caution]. I really didn’t know where I was in position yet,” Stone said in Victory Lane. “I was basically playing the points game getting as close to the front as I can. We I went to the back I was thinking to let it pan out a little and we will pick off as many cars as we can. That what we did and it worked out with that caution.”

Chucky Dumblewski set the early pace over Jason Morrison, Gary Silkey, Luke Horning and Kenny Gates.

The caution flew on lap six when Horning made hard contact with the first-turn wall sending the field scrambling. Stone got turned in the melee but was able to continue, restarting at the back of the field.

Gates made his way to the front, passing Dumblewski for the lead on lap nine, while Beau Ballard took over the second spot on lap 13.

Stone worked his way back toward the front and was a distant fifth when the caution flew after A.J. Waters clipped the first turn wall.

Gates held off Ballard on the single-file restart as Stone jumped to the high-side of the speedway, moving from fifth to second in two laps and set his sights on the front-running Gates.

Stone got the lead on the backstretch and held the advantage at the white flag. Gates retook the lead through turns one and two and led at the end of the backstretch. Stone powered around the high line and won the drag race to the finish for his 67th career win.

Gates placed second followed by Ballard, Morrison and Dumblewski round out the top five, while Ivan Joslin, Josh Coonradt, Randy Cosselman , Silkey and Jim Normoyle complete the second five.

Dingman took the lead from Mark Lighthall on the third circuit and pulled away for his second win of the season in the 15-lap Limited Sportsman feature. Ryan Sweet started eighth and finished second, followed by Josh Kane, Zach Dufel and Connor Prokop.

Kerrie Hollenbeck led the opening two laps over a large field in the 12-lap 4-cylinder mini stock feature before his brother Ken, took the point on the third lap.

John Napoli made his way through the field, getting past Kerrie Hollenbeck to take home his second-straight DOHC feature win, while Ken Hollenbeck remained undefeated in the SOHC division with eight-straight victories to push his career win total to 76. Invaders Barndon Ely and Elmer Montville round out the top five overall finishers.

Fonda Speedway returns to action next Saturday with the annual Bill Ag Modified Elimination Race with more than $3,000 on the line if a driver sweeps his way through the competition.

The DIRTcar 358 modified event at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park was postponed Sunday night due to the high probability of thunderstorms. A rescheduled date has not been confirmed.

Billy Decker won the modified feature over Matt Sheppard Friday night at Utica-Rome Speedway, while Payton Talbot won the sportsman feature and Beau Ballard topped the pro stock field.

Former Fonda Speedway regular Jimmy Davis picked up the modified victory Saturday night at Devils Bowl Speedway.

Olden Dwyer won the big-block modified feature Saturday night at Lebanon Valley Speedway, while Jason Herrington won the small-block main event.

Keith Flach topped Matt DeLorenzo and Marc Johnson for the modified victory Friday night at Albany-Saratoga Speedway.
