DETROIT — Inside the quality services department at the Abbott Laboratories baby formula manufacturing plant in Sturgis, employees were in their cubicles on a Friday morning in May 2020 when the sound of an electric shock sizzled through the office space.

One employee thought someone had been electrocuted. A worker holding a stun gun promised it was just a bug zapper before deploying the device again, sending another jolt of electricity through the office.

Officials of the Texas school district where the nation’s deadliest classroom shooting in a decade happened have reinstated the principal of the school where the shooting happened. Uvalde school district officials had suspended Robb Elementary School Principal Mandy Gutierrez with pay after a legislative report criticized her school security after a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at the school on May 24. On Wednesday, Gutierrez rebutted the criticisms point by point in a letter sent to the committee that authored the report. On Thursday, Uvalde school Superintendent Hal Harrell sent her and her attorney a brief letter lifting the suspension and reinstating her as an administrator.

RENTON, Wash. — While speculation about DK Metcalf’s future lingered in national NFL circles throughout the offseason, the Seahawks expressed confidence at every turn that a deal would eventually get done.

The U.N. Security Council has voted to extend its political mission in Libya, but at Russia’s insistence for only three months rather than a year-long mandate. The council’s three African members abstained in Thursday's vote to protest Russia’s blocking the longer extension they say is needed to help the divided country move to elections and stability. Russia’s deputy ambassador reiterated Moscow's position that the U.N. mission must first get a new special representative before it has a longer mandate. The last special envoy resigned Nov. 23. American diplomat Stephanie Williams has been serving as a special adviser but she is leaving, so the U.N. mission will have no leader during Libya’s current political crisis.

ATLANTA — A team of national Democratic Party officials met Thursday with Atlanta leaders to scope out whether State Farm Arena — which has been used for basketball games, pop concerts and early voting — could be transformed into the host site of the next Democratic National Convention.

Two of the Supreme Court justices who disagree most often on the outcomes of cases say they both still try hard to persuade each other, and sometimes succeed. Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Justice Amy Coney Barrett made the comments in a pretaped conversation made public for the first time Thursday evening. Barrett, a conservative, and Sotomayor, a liberal, were on opposite sides of a decision last month in which the court stripped away women’s constitutional protections for abortion. They also disagreed on decisions where the court expanded gun rights and lowered barriers to religion in public life. But Barrett says: “We like each other. We do.”

One of the biggest cries during the police reform marches of the summer of 2020 was about the inability of the public — even some police departments — to accurately track cops with bad records.

The New York attorney general's office says a former state Supreme Court justice and a ex-Democratic power broker have been sentenced to prison for their roles in a bribery scheme. Authorities say they influenced judicial decisions and official appointments. Both men had pleaded guilty. G. Steven Pigeon was the former chairman of the Erie County Democratic Committee. He received a one-year sentence. Former Justice John Michalek received one year and four months. However, at Thursday's sentencing, state Supreme Court Justice Donald Cerio Jr. granted an application from Michalek’s lawyer to put the sentencing on hold until September.

WASHINGTON — Around 20 minutes before Eric Greitens officially became the former governor of Missouri, he put out a 1,485-word list of his gubernatorial accomplishments.

Before he stepped to the podium, K.J. Wright was hopeful he’d be able to keep his emotions in check. It took only a couple of minutes for the tears to start. The 11-year NFL veteran announced his retirement a day after signing a one-day contract so that he could step away from the game with the team that drafted Wright in the fourth round of the 2011 draft. Wright was a stalwart for the best teams in Seattle’s history, a Pro Bowl selection and 10-year anchor as part of the Seahawks’ defense. Wright played his final season in 2021 for Las Vegas.

WASHINGTON — A congressional trip to Taiwan led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., became the focus of President Joe Biden's call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday, further underscoring the latest U.S.-China rift that has sent relations to their lowest point in decades.

BALTIMORE — As Lamar Jackson and the Ravens continue their negotiations over the most important contract in franchise history, the star quarterback’s most important gesture of the process might’ve also been the simplest: He showed up for work Wednesday.

Actor Joe Manganiello got some big surprises when researchers for the PBS show “Finding Your Roots” went digging through his family history. Host Henry Louis Gates Jr. informed the “True Blood” star that the man the family believed to be Manganiello's paternal grandfather really wasn't. The actor says he found out that his real grandfather was a Black man of mixed race. Manganiello says the discovery was “fascinating.” Further research showed that his fifth great-grandfather was a slave who later became free and fought in the Continental Army. The new season of “Finding Your Roots” begins Jan. 3.

The person perhaps most unfazed by San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan’s pre-training camp proclamation that the 49ers were now Trey Lance’s team was Lance himself. While some people outside the organization may have wondered if the Niners were ready to turn a contender over to an untested, second-year quarterback, Lance had been operating all offseason as the starter.

Former President Donald Trump says the Saudi-funded LIV Golf circuit has created a “gold rush” for players. Trump played a round Thursday on his home course at Trump National Bedminster. This one was the LIV Golf Invitational pro-am. He played with Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau. Trump says what the Saudi-backed league is doing is good for golf because it gives players an alternative. It's been a disruptor for more than the PGA Tour. Now the Ryder Cup is involved. Henrik Stenson signed with LIV and was stripped of his captaincy for Europe. Reports indicated Luke Donald will be replacing him.

A spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers says there is no evidence that the fatal shooting of three siblings by their 15-year-old brother was premeditated. Authorities say the 15-year-old also killed himself. Troopers spokesperson Tim DeSpain says there were “no obvious reasons" for what happened. The children were killed Tuesday in a home near Fairbanks. Troopers say the parents were not home at the time of the shootings. Three other siblings in the home were not hurt. DeSpain says that after the shots were fired, a neighbor discovered the bodies and called 911.

An autopsy report says a Los Angeles police officer died from injuries he received in a training accident but wasn’t beaten by fellow officers as his mother alleges. The report issued last month says 32-year-old Houston Tipping suffered a spinal cord injury after he fell down while holding another officer in a “bear hug” while acting as instructor during a May 26 exercise at the Police Academy. The report says Tipping fractured his neck. He died three days later after developing a brain injury due to cell death from lack of oxygen. The death was ruled an accident. Tipping’s mother has claimed he was beaten by other officers to “simulate a mob.”

PHILADELPHIA — A woman who admitted torching police cars amid the 2020 racial injustice protests that roiled Philadelphia was sentenced to 21/2 years in federal prison on Thursday, the stiffest sentence yet in a case against the six demonstrators who have been charged with similar crimes.
